Some sessions stay with me. This was one of them.
When Laura reached out, she wasn’t just booking photos with her dog: she was honouring a love story. One that had changed forever, but never ended. In July 2022, she lost her beloved husband, Brendan, unexpectedly. And in the thick of heartbreak, one constant remained: Bonnie.
His girl.
Bonnie wasn’t just a pet. She was Brendan’s loyal shadow. His early mornings. His quiet moments. His every day.
Every morning at 4am, when the world was still asleep, they had their ritual:
It was their thing. Their rhythm. Their love language.
And heartbreakingly, Bonnie was the last one Brendan said goodbye to.
After he passed, Bonnie grieved right alongside Laura. She was confused. Quiet. Still fiercely loyal. And at his funeral, surrounded by 500 people, it was Bonnie who gently pulled Laura forward. It was like she knew they had one more goodbye to share.
Photographing Bonnie and Laura was something much deeper than ‘just’ a dog photography session. Bonnie doesn’t just remind Laura of Brendan: she holds him. No object or keepsake could do that. She’s the thread tying yesterday to today. The heartbeat of their family.
And while the days look different now, one thing hasn’t changed: those four snoot kisses.
Every morning.
Still.
This session reminded me why photography matters. Not just for now, but for later… when memories fade, when the little things feel just out of reach and the details get fuzzy.
One day, these photos won’t just be images. They’ll be proof of love. Evidence of a life well lived, and deeply shared.
If you’ve ever thought about capturing the bond between you and your dog, whether it’s at the start of your story, or a precious final chapter, please don’t wait. You can read more about my Perth Dog Photography Sessions here.
